5K to HALF MARATHON: IMPROVE YOUR RUNNING

5K to HALF MARATHON: IMPROVE YOUR RUNNING

From your first 5K to 21.1K — build endurance, train smarter and learn to go the distance.

Improvements

Going from a 5K to a half marathon isn’t simply about learning to run further. It’s about building an engine capable of staying consistent when the distance starts to test you. A 5K can be fast, aggressive and uncomfortable from the start. Over 21.1 kilometres, patience becomes part of the performance. Your training needs to develop endurance, efficiency and the ability to keep moving when your legs begin to feel the miles.

The biggest mistake is trying to increase distance too quickly. Instead, build gradually. Keep easy runs genuinely easy, introduce longer runs over time and use shorter tempo or interval sessions to maintain speed. You don’t need every run to leave you exhausted. Some of the most important kilometres will feel almost too comfortable. They create the aerobic foundation that allows you to run further, recover faster and eventually hold a stronger pace for longer. Consistency across weeks matters far more than one huge training session.

As the distance increases, recovery becomes part of training rather than something that happens around it. Sleep, hydration, nutrition and rest days all influence how well you perform when you next lace up. Your kit matters too. Longer runs expose every small distraction, from uncomfortable seams to layers that hold too much heat. Lightweight, breathable clothing that moves naturally with your body allows you to focus on the run rather than constantly adjusting what you're wearing. Find the setup that works for you during training and keep race day familiar.

The mental side changes too. Twenty-one kilometres can feel intimidating when you're used to running five, so stop thinking about the entire distance at once. Break longer runs into smaller sections and focus on reaching the next point. Some sessions will feel effortless; others won't. Learning to continue when the run isn't going perfectly is part of becoming a stronger runner. You aren't just increasing the distance your body can cover — you're increasing the amount of discomfort you're capable of managing.

Your first half marathon doesn't need to be about chasing a time. Getting from 5K to 21.1K is already progress worth recognising. Build patiently, trust the work you've put in and enjoy seeing distances that once felt impossible become part of your normal training. There will always be another pace to chase and another finish line ahead. For now, keep showing up, keep building the engine and take it one kilometre at a time.
